Art Your Way: Interactive velcro Textile Wall

For my interim show project during my final year studying Fine Art at Anglia Ruskin University, I created an interactive installation titled “Art Your Way.”

This project was inspired by my love of playful characters, bright colours, and tactile art. I designed a large carpet-covered wall with punch needle textile pieces that visitors could move and rearrange. Each piece was a hybrid character combining sea creatures and desserts – for example, a clownfish cupcake or a donut jellyfish.

The textile pieces had Velcro backs, allowing viewers to take them off the wall and reposition them however they liked. My aim was to create a work that was not just looked at but played with and interacted with, encouraging people to create their own art compositions and to engage with creativity in a fun, hands-on way.

This was my first time exploring punch needle embroidery, and I loved how it allowed me to create soft, raised textures and detailed designs. Learning this new technique expanded my textile skills and gave me ideas for how interactive art can connect people to playful storytelling.

Through Art Your Way, I wanted to invite people to step out of the usual gallery mindset of “don’t touch the art” and instead become part of the artwork themselves, fostering imagination, creativity, and joyful exploration.
