Leading a Natural Dyeing Workshop for Inclusive Learning Students

Demonstrating the natural dying process to students

During my HND Fine Art course, I was nominated by my peers to be project leader for a series of natural dyeing workshops delivered to students in the Inclusive Learning Department at my college.

The workshops spanned three weeks and were designed to introduce SEN students to new textile techniques while supporting creativity and confidence. We explored processes such as batik and tie-dyeing, using natural elements like turmeric and spirulina to create vibrant, eco-friendly dyes.

As project leader, I helped design, organise, and deliver the workshops. This included planning the sessions, preparing materials, creating demonstration examples, and leading group teaching. I made sure the activities were accessible, engaging, and allowed everyone to take part at their own pace.

The students enjoyed experimenting with colours and learning how natural dyes are made, and the workshops also taught them about the sustainability impact of dyeing processes and how choosing natural dyes can help the environment.

I received positive feedback from the tutors, who praised my confident delivery, clear instructions, and supportive hands-on help with the students. Seeing the group’s excitement and pride in their finished fabrics was a highlight for me, and this experience strengthened my skills in leadership, workshop planning, and inclusive teaching.
