During the first year of my HND in Fine Art, I took part in a competition set by Kvadrat Textiles, challenging students to recycle their fabric samples into innovative artwork.

For my project, I created ‘Our Coral Reef’, a multimedia installation celebrating the beauty and fragility of coral reefs. Using sculpture, crochet, and recycled fabrics, I constructed colourful fish, corals, and sea creatures to bring the underwater world to life. I wanted to raise awareness of how vital coral reefs are to marine ecosystems and highlight the urgent need to protect them from the impacts of climate change.

To create this piece, I transformed Kvadrat’s fabric samples into 3D forms using fabric manipulation and construction techniques. Combining vibrant textures and tactile materials allowed me to capture the richness of coral reefs while promoting sustainable art practices.

I was honoured that ‘Our Coral Reef’ was selected for exhibition at Kvadrat’s Soft Cell showroom in Great Sutton Street, London. This opportunity not only strengthened my skills in concept development and material exploration but also reinforced my commitment to using art and design to communicate important environmental messages.

Creating this piece challenged me to think strategically about materials and audience impact – skills I am excited to continue developing as I pursue a career in creative direction and design.
