For my Final Major Project on the HND Fine Art course, I created a conceptual self-portrait titled “How I See the World: A Neurodiverse Perspective on Art.”

As someone who is neurodiverse, I experience the world in a unique and colourful way. This project encases my optimistic view of life, celebrating how I find joy in colours, patterns, and small details that others might overlook.

I used multiple canvases to represent different aspects of my identity and experiences. Each piece combines mixed media painting, lino printing, and bead embroidery to bring out rich textures and bright colours that reflect my sensory experiences. For example, one canvas shows a stylised self-portrait with rainbow beadwork across my top to symbolise my bright, positive outlook. Another features a playful cartoon clownfish surrounded by colourful beads and buttons, representing my love for joyful characters and vibrant aesthetics.

By using bead embroidery and textured materials, I wanted to create artworks that invite viewers to look closely and feel the sensory richness that is part of my daily life. My aim was not only to share my own perspective but also to encourage people to reflect on their own wellbeing – to notice the colours, textures, and small joys around them.

Through “How I See the World,” I hope to raise awareness of neurodiversity and show how different ways of experiencing the world can lead to unique and meaningful creative expressions.
