Microbiology and Climate Change: My Second-Year Fine Art Project

During my second year studying Fine Art, I explored the hidden world of microbiology and its impact on climate change. I wanted to visualise the tiny organisms that play such a huge role in our environment but often go unnoticed.
I began by researching microbes that both cause and are affected by climate change, such as algae and bacteria. Inspired by the forms, textures, and colours seen under a microscope, I created a series of artworks that aimed to make these microscopic worlds visible and engaging.
One of my main outcomes was a collection of soft sculptures inspired by petri dishes, using textiles and mixed media to replicate microbial patterns and colonies. I also created beaded embroidery pieces that explored microscopic structures through intricate, tactile details. Alongside this, I produced a series of abstract screen print canvases that translated the layered complexity of microbiological imagery into vibrant compositions.
As part of my jewellery-making unit, I designed recycled shrink plastic jewellery inspired by plant and leaf cells. This included earrings and necklaces, which I displayed creatively inside petri dishes to highlight the link between art, science, and sustainability.
This project was exhibited at Hertfordshire Art Gallery, where it raised awareness of the microbiology behind climate change and environmental concerns. Through these works, I aimed to spark curiosity about how invisible worlds shape our planet and to encourage conversations about environmental responsibility.
